Before It Happens: Online

Shop Wisely

Always use a secure browser to guard your online transactions. An easy way to tell if a site is secure is, during the checkout process. Make sure the site URL starts with "https" instead of "http," and a small padlock icon is displayed in the lower right-hand corner of your browser.
Use the latest browser version available to be sure your browser has the most up-to-date encryption capabilities. Best browser to use is Mozilla's FireFox .

Look for Website privacy policies. They should answer questions about how the site manages the accuracy, access, security, and control of personal information collected by the site, how the information will be used, and whether it will be provided to third parties. If you don't see a privacy policy, or if you can't understand it, consider doing business elsewhere.

Only use a credit card for online shopping.  Do not use a check or debit card.
